The Lord put it on my heart to study Psalm 119! Today’s focus is on the first section titled Aleph, which is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
The main theme for this section is diligence.
This is especially important for new believers. Diligently seeking the Lord is how you grow—from feeding on milk (like a new baby in the faith) to feeding on meat (as a mature believer).
You might notice my wording is a little different if you’re reading in the New Living Translation (NLT) or New International Version (NIV). I usually read from the English Standard Version (ESV).
Scripture Focus
Psalm 119:1–8
Aleph – These verses open the longest chapter in the Bible. They focus on walking in God’s law and seeking Him with your whole heart.
Context and Background
Many believe King David wrote this psalm. The writing style and message fit his character, though the Bible doesn’t directly name the author. It was likely written after the Babylonian exile, a time when God’s people were being called back to holiness.
Key Points/Takeaways
These verses describe what a diligent servant of the Lord looks like:
- Blameless and Righteousness
To be blameless means to live in right standing with God. This is what it means to be righteous in His sight. - Verse 2b – Seeking God with the Whole Heart
This person is humble and full of integrity. They are open to whatever God is doing and follow His commandments. Their heart is submitted and attentive to Him. - Diligence in Following God’s Word
This person follows God’s word with purpose and consistency. They stay in prayer and remain firm in their faith. - Freedom from Shame
When you’re focused on God’s commands, there’s no room for shame. God’s ways are not shameful. - Verse 7a – An Upright Heart
This heart is being transformed by the Holy Spirit. Our job is to stay in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:16) and let Him work in us. - Verse 7b – Learning His Righteous Rules
We learn God’s just and righteous ways by spending time in His word.

- This passage challenged how I view my own diligence. Am I making time for God that is unrushed and meaningful?
- I’ve dealt with shame for much of my life. It’s freeing to know that when I focus on God, I don’t have to carry shame.
- The clear command I see here is to learn and honor God’s boundaries.
7. Application
- Set intentional, unrushed time for God—in Scripture and prayer.
- Read His word to learn what His boundaries are.
- Stay open to the Holy Spirit and the work He wants to do in you.
