Studying the Bible is one of the most important ways to grow in your faith and deepen your relationship with God. If you’re a new believer, you may feel overwhelmed by where to start—but don’t worry! With a few simple tools, you can begin studying Scripture with confidence and clarity.
Here are 5 essential Bible study tools to help you get started:
1. The Bible
Not all Bible translations are the same. Some Bibles, like the NIV or NLT, focus on making the meaning clear and easy to read. These are called thought-for-thought translations. Others, like the ESV, try to stick closely to the exact words and structure of the original text. These are called word-for-word translations.
- New Living Translation (NLT) is what you would consider a thought-for-thought translation. Translations like this focuses on translating the meaning of the text rather than the exact words. This makes it clear and easy to read. Think of it like explaining to a friend: instead of repeating every word, you share what it means in a way they’ll easily understand.
- New International Version (NIV) is between the two versions, a balanced translation. Translations like this aim to find a middle ground between word-for-word accuracy and thought-for-thought clarity. This is great if you want a mix of precision and readability.
- English Standard Version (ESV) is a technically a word-for-word translation, meaning this translation tries to stay as close as possible to the exact words and structure of the original language. But it is not as rigid as other translations in its readability. These translations are a great choice if you want a more in-depth study without being overly difficult to read.
Pick a translation that feels clear to you. Add another one later for comparison as you learn more.
2. A Study Bible
A study Bible is a great way to gain insight into what you are reading. Here are some benefits to using a study Bible:
1. Helpful Explanations
Study Bibles include notes that explain difficult verses or concepts, helping you to understand the meaning of Scripture more easily.
2. Background Information
They provide historical, cultural, geographical details, giving you context about the time and place where events in the Bible happened.
3. Cross-References
Study Bibles often include cross-references, which are notes that point you to other verses about the same topic. These help you see how different parts of the Bible fit together.
4. Application Insights
Some study Bibles, like the Life Application Study Bible, offer practical advice on how to live out what you’re learning in your daily life.
5. Maps, Charts, and Timelines
Visual tools like maps and timelines help you see where events took place and how they fit into the bigger picture of God’s story.
6. Great for All Levels
Whether you’re new to the Bible or have been studying for years, a study Bible can deepen your understanding and make complex passages easier to grasp.
3. A Commentary
If you’re unsure about what the Scripture means, try checking a commentary for clarity. I personally use Enduring Word Commentary but there are more to choose from. These are especially helpful when you are building your spiritual knowledge.
4. A Notebook or Journal
Write down your thoughts, questions, and prayers during Bible study is incredibly valuable. A simple notebook or journal will help you track what you’re learning and reflect on how God is speaking to you through His word.
5. A Bible App
Bible apps make it easy to study Scripture anytime, anywhere. Apps like YouVersion or Blue Letter Bible provide access to multiple translations, daily devotionals, and even audio Bibles. They’re perfect for reading on the go or diving deeper into a particular passage.
- This can also be used similar to a concordance but if you would like a completely no digital study, a concordance can help!
Simple Tips for Getting Started
- Don’t feel like you need to use all these tools at once! Start with one or two that feel most helpful to you.
- Focus on being consistent in your study time. Quality is more important than quantity.
With these simple tools, you’ll be well-equipped to dive into God’s Word and grow in your understanding of His truth. Remember, Bible study is a journey, and there’s no need to rush—take it one step at a time and trust that the Holy Spirit will guide you.
