Have you ever wondered who you truly are beyond the labels the world gives you? When we are aware of our identity in Christ, we don’t allow the world to tell us who we are or who we should be. When you know who you are, this transforms your life and strengthens your faith. Let’s explore what the Bible says about who we are in Him.

Why Knowing Your Identity in Christ Matters

Having a clear understanding of your identity gives us believers confidence and purpose. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here.” This means worldly labels such as success, failure, appearance, these things are fleeting and our lives are not ruled by them but by God’s truth, which is eternal.

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20

What Does the Bible Say About Our Identity?

  • A Child of God
    • “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12
As a believer, we have the chance to experience belonging and love in a way we can’t experience with the world. Love Himself (Did you know love is a person?) wants to be with you and is delighted to call Himself your Father.
  • Chosen and Set Apart (Holy)
    • “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9
We are chosen to be holy. What does it mean to be holy? It means to be set apart. You are not of the world. You do not handle situations and life how the world does. We do it how God intends us to handle them and the best part, we are not alone dealing with any of it. God chose us to be with Him. As God’s chosen people, we are His hands and feet on earth. He doesn’t actually need us, but He wants us and that makes all the difference.
  • Forgiven and Redeemed
    • “God decided in advance to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ. This is what He wanted to do, and it gave Him great pleasure.” Ephesians 1:5
As a result of being forgiven and redeemed, we no longer have to deal with the weight of sin and guilt. Does this mean we are sinless? No, it means we are free from sin and guilt. What’s the difference? This is a freedom granted to us by Jesus’ work on the cross and we are no longer limited by sin and guilt.

How Our Identity in Christ Transforms Our Lives

Freedom from Fear and Insecurity

  • “So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when He adopted you as His own children.” Romans 8:15

You can trust in God’s promises. He can’t lie and isn’t careless with His speech. All of His words are intentional, this means you can believe what He says concerning you.

Empowered to Live with Purpose

  • “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10

Since you are a child of God, this means you can walk in boldness in God’s calling for you. If God is calling you to it, He has a plan to get you through it.

Confidence in Spiritual Battles

  • “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Ephesians 6:10-11

You are a child of God. This position puts you above the devil. When before, you were unknowingly under him. But now, stand tall in your identity. We are called kings and priests with Jesus as our King and High Priest. We have dominion because we are heirs with Jesus. This is why it is so important for us believers to pray and to keep others in prayer because we have this authority and it can be the difference between life and death. “The earnest prayer of a righteous (in right standing with God) person has great power.”

Practical Steps to Walk in Your True Identity

  • Renew Your Mind with Scripture
    • “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2
Read your Bible daily. This could be with only the Bible, with a devotional, or with a Bible reading plan. Just get in it every day. This is how you test and discern. When you know the Word of God, nobody and no spirit can pull a wool over your eyes. You will be aware and can be confident.
  • Speak God’s Truth Over Your Life
    • “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” Proverbs 18:21
Read God’s promises out loud. Speak life over yourself and use it to push back against anything that is trying to tell you contrary to His word and His truth about you.
  • Surround Yourself with Believers Who Remind You Who You Are
    • “And let us not neglect our meeting together as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” Hebrews 10:25
We feel the weight of life on earth. All of us do at some point. This is why it is so important for us to have a community of believers. To be an isolated believer is a very dangerous place to be. When you stumble or fall, you want someone to be able to help you up. When it feels like your back is against the wall, you need people who can help you see that it’s not a wall at all — it’s another back standing strong with you. When the enemy is attacking your mental health (which he will), you want to be able to have people in your corner, warring with you and interceding with you.
  • “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:12

Encouragement for New Believers

It’s okay if you don’t understand your identity in Christ right now. Just know that what God says about you is true. God will, patiently, faithfully and in time, help you understand and reveal more of His truth. Remember, this is a journey, not a race. As you grow, remember that your identity is secure in Him, no matter what.

A Prayer for You

God,

Thank You for this opportunity to explain Your word. I pray that this has been helpful for each and every person that comes across this post. I pray that You would reveal Your truth about them and help them to accept it if they are reluctant to believe. You love them so much and more than anything, I want them to know this abundant love and why You want so badly for them to know what You’ve always known about them. God, I pray this over myself as well. Continue to show me, me. I pray against any schemes or tactics of the enemy that will try to come against us and our understanding. I love You!

In Jesus name, amen!

Reflection Questions:

  • What worldly labels have I believed about myself?
  • Which Scriptures about my identity stand out to me most?

Scripture Memory Suggestion: 2 Corinthians 5:17

“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”
